This morning I was at the British Library hosting the
Mallowstreet University Drive-In. Four groups of pension plan managers and
trustees heard four great presentations from experts on the tricky (but increasingly
essential) business of investing in infrastructure and property. Structured properly, these asset classes offer long-dated index-linked cashflows, which are highly prized by defined benefit pension funds. Each group listened to one expert before moving on to the next.
I know I bang on about this, but it is extraordinary how
powerful it can be when a crowd is empowered by knowledge. It doesn’t even have
to take very long. If you have the right guys imparting the essential wisdom,
you can arrive at 08:15 knowing the bare minimum and leave at 13:00 with a good
understanding of the art of the possible.
Plus, you meet a new group of like-minded folk with the same end game:
to help pension funds achieve the basic but challenging aim of paying all the
pension scheme benefits – on time!
